about the rachel

I graduated in 2017 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, with BA’s in Linguistics and Judaic Studies. After working briefly in pharmacy, I returned to linguistics VIA the Master’s Program at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, which I finished in the Spring of 2022.

My research interests include Jewish Diasporic Languages; Language Documentation, Conservation, and Revitalization; Morphology; Fieldwork; and Historical Linguistics. I’ve also, via my Master’s program, gotten into digital speech communities and the language of extremism, particularly that of white supremacist speech communities.

This blog was created in Fall of 2019 for my American English class and began as a “notebook” to collect my thoughts and observations on various topics as they relate to American English throughout the semester. Then it was the same for my History of English class, then for Sociolinguistics… and then I graduated.

And here I am! Again! As I write this at the beginning of Summer 2022, I’ve been working in a lab setting as their resident linguist (I’ve continued being resident words-person among my friends in my non-work hours, as well). Hopefully, I’ll continue to write about linguisticky things I come across in my conversations at work or home, my random internet browsing, or in the course of doing my actual real big boy job on this site.
